So I know this blog is an update on me, but this week I want it to be about Brent, and well, all caregivers. They are the unspoken heroes out there taking care of the sick ones, toiling, day in and day out, sitting in the wings but also feeling the toll of this (or any) diagnosis. This week during my treatment it was Brent’s birthday, ya, he got to spend his birthday sitting in an infusion room, well first he got to drive for 4 hours to Spokane and then he got to sit in a doctor’s office and infusion room for 4 hours. Not exactly the nicest way to spend your birthday, but like the champ he is, he did – because he’s a rock star!!!
My aunt Marti wrote a book the Gentle Caregiver (you can find it on Amazon), it is a good read. Reminds you that there is more than one person that needs to be taken care of during this whole endeavor. Many of you (well really almost all of you) ask how Brent is doing, and the offers to give Brent a break from driving, offers of food so he doesn’t have to cook have been wonderful. I feel so bad sitting here with weak legs or sleeping for 19 hours (ya, that’s happened) why he cleans the house, cooks the meals, drives for the 8th time to and fro to Spokane, and I just wish there was more I could do. But at this point all I can do is give my continued undying love and gratitude that I have the best husband in the world. So here’s my shout-out to the birthday boy who has been by my side every step of the way, who helps me laugh when all I want to do is cry, who helps me see the silver lining, who lets me know it’s okay to feel weak and be sleepy because of everything I’m going through.
So if you make it down to the Silver Dollar on Saturday, make sure you give a big thank you to Brent. And if you know of any other caregivers, make sure you give a shout-out to them, they are busting butt just as hard as the patient (and some days I think more).
Yes! Brent and all caregivers are angels on Earth! Thank you for the “plug” for “Gentle Caregiver”:) You’re always in my thoughts and prayers, Michele. HUGS!!!
